History of The Ashes

If you are a genuine fan and fond of cricket, it is impossible that you don't have any knowledge that England and Australia play a test series called the Ashes.

Ashes is one of the Cricket series that is so much popular in Cricket fans. It played every four years between Australia and England. It is a game of two nations and also a matter of national pride for fans. The word Ashes came when Australia beat England in English land. This is the first time that Australia beat England in their own soil and every newspaper was stating that English cricket had “died” at the Oval and Ashes send to Australia.

Remaining English media was responding to this article by calling the series again in Australia as the mission to take the Ashes again. In 1882-83, a small urn had given to England captain as a gift. This small urn is what is referred to as ‘The Ashes’

The Urn was in ownership of the Family of Darnley. The urn bears the following poem on it. The general opinion is that Florence Morphy wife of Ivo Bligh is supposed to have penned the poem, but there is no way of confirming that.

"When Ivo goes back with the urn, the urn;
Studds, Steel, Read and Tylecote return, return;
The welkin will ring loud,
The great crowd will feel proud,
Seeing Barlow and Bates with the urn, the urn;
And the rest coming home with the urn."
